Hey - I’m Matt, the guy behind Backyard Yum.
This site has always been a pet project of mine. Backyard Yum is really a mix of a few things I enjoy personally:
- Outdoor cooking
- Camping and RV travel
- Pellet grills and BBQ
- Solar cooking and preparedness
- Backyard food projects
- Simple meals that don’t require a culinary degree
"Backyard" Yum means, literally, cooking in your backyard. Gilling and entertaining, big food, big grills, etc. It also means, in a wider sense, your own backyard being anywhere you can roam. RV camping, car camping, backpack camping, etc.

This site started with solar cooking, but over time it grew into something bigger: a place for outdoor cooking, backyard meals, camp cooking, pellet grills, RV food, BBQ, and generally just enjoying food outside.
I’ve always liked cooking methods that are practical, simple, and a little different. Sometimes that means smoking ribs on a pellet grill. Sometimes it means making dinner at camp or cooking with a solar oven in the Arizona sun. If it gets people outside and makes cooking more enjoyable, I’m probably interested in it.
I'm a full-time dad, I run several businesses, I like my gym time, and the fact is, I like saving time. The food I make is designed to be simple to make, and delicious to eat. You won't find any 12-hour smoking tutorials here.
I’m not a professionally trained chef, and honestly, that’s kind of the point. Most of the recipes and ideas here are built for real life - approachable food, practical gear, and cooking methods regular people can actually use.
One of the biggest parts of this site is solar cooking. Backyard Yum now hosts one of the largest collections of Sun Oven recipes and solar cooking resources online. I’m also the owner and publisher of the Sun Oven Cookbook publications through AIM Retail Partners, LLC.
Solar cooking remains a big part of the site because it fits naturally with outdoor cooking, RV living, homesteading, emergency preparedness, and energy-independent lifestyles.
At the end of the day, Backyard Yum is just about making outdoor cooking easier, more fun, and more accessible - whether you’re cooking in your backyard, at camp, at an RV site, or completely off-grid.
